Genchat 2015.09.11 – Tech and Genealogy Societies

Now that I am President of a couple of groups, plus doing a lot of travelling, I rarely get a chance to participate in #Genchat live. For those unfamiliar with #Genchat, it is an informal online chat based around 6 or 7 questions, with chatting done by Twitter, which limits responses to 140 characters. So brevity reigns !

“Every fortnight, they gather for sixty minutes of rapid-fire conversation about #genealogy: It’s #genchat — the original Power Hour! It’s a strange atmosphere (to say the least) that is informative and entertaining fun… and, yes, it’s addictive too. Join in, all are welcome. You’ll leave with a new group of friends!”

More information on #Genchat here.

But I did enjoy reading the comments (tweets) on this topic – although it is USA-centric, I wonder how these comments would apply to Australian societies as well ? The comments are certainly worth reflecting upon.

It was particularly interesting as this weekend is the annual conference for Family History Associations in my state of NSW, in Australia. And there were awards for best society website and encouragement awards announced at the conference.

The winner in one category was Wyong Family History Group, and the fairly new Hornsby Family History Group received an encouragement award. Congratulations to both groups.

SparrowBeth73Sep 12, 12:12pm via tchat.io

packrat74Sep 12, 12:13pm via Nurph

ancestryjourneySep 12, 12:14pm via TweetDeck

@packrat74 @SparrowBeth73@geneapleau My society FB page is getting better and better at engagement – it takes time. #genchat

SparrowBeth73Sep 12, 12:14pm via tchat.io A2 cont: Yes it’s working. Important NOT 4 1 person do it all. If it goes down & he quits, you’re sunk & start over. #BeenThere #genchat

A2 it sounds like the same people do all the work or nothing gets done. A fear I have if joining a gensoc. #genchat

ancestryjourneySep 12, 12:16pm via TweetDeck

@mfhy2k A concern for any volunteer based org, I think. Avoidable, though.#genchat

ancestryjourneySep 12, 12:16pm via TweetDeck

@mfhy2k The benefit from the society is well worth it, IMO. #genchat

susankitchensSep 12, 12:16pm via Twitter Web Client

Greetings, #genchat! Here to lurk, mostly. But here. Plus. Topic = tech. yay

mfhy2kSep 12, 12:17pm via Twitter for Android

_genchatSep 12, 12:17pm via Nurph

Q3: What can/should your #gensoc do to get more members engaged in the tech side of the organization? #genchat

ancestryjourneySep 12, 12:18pm via TweetDeck

@mfhy2k That’s what I mean – it’s avoidable. You just have to work at it a bit to get more ppl (or just walk away when they ask) #genchat

geneapleauSep 12, 12:18pm via tchat.io

A3. Put the question out to ALL their members–they may be surprised by the answer! #genchat

SparrowBeth73Sep 12, 12:18pm via tchat.io

DanteEubanksSep 12, 12:18pm via Twitter for Android

@ancestryjourney Some groups are afraid the two shouldn’t exist together, but together we could bridge the gaps on a grand scale! #genchat

GhyxionSep 12, 12:19pm via tchat.io

A3 – Now that I am taking over our version of Gen Chat, I hope I can introduce some more tech #genchat

ancestryjourneySep 12, 12:19pm via TweetDeck

@mandorac And you may never… so is there an alternate solution to email?#genchat Does it have to be email?

@DanteEubanks You should be the Tech for GenSoc motivational speaker!#genchat

geneapleauSep 12, 12:25pm via tchat.io

@mandorac I suppose if it’s just 1 person without email, you can work around that some old-fashioned way. #genchat

mfhy2kSep 12, 12:25pm via Twitter for Android

geneapleauSep 12, 12:28pm via tchat.io

@rcurious Sounds like you’re meeting a real need out there. #genchat

ancestryjourneySep 12, 12:28pm via TweetDeck

SparrowBeth73Sep 12, 12:28pm via tchat.io
